AWEPA is working together with the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy (NIMD) to facilitate political dialogue in Benin on key development challenges and to strengthen the Parliament’s institutional capacity. On May 13-17, together with Benin’s National Assembly, AWEPA will hold a series of activities aimed at strengthening the role of political actors in the development and oversight of public policies towards the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Two days of exchanges and discussions between political actors will be held in the town of Ouidah on 13-14 May. About twenty MPs mainly from the parliament’s Finance and Planning Committees are expected to participate. French Member of Parliament, Mr. Bernard Lesterlin, President of the France-Bénin friendship group, invited by AWEPA, will bring his expertise to the discussions in light of his parliamentary experience since 2007 and his previous contribution to the drafting of the legislative framework for the public administration reform in Benin in the early 1990s. Following the discussions in Ouidah, a group of MPs and political party members, representative of all the main political groupings and party groups in Parliament, will engage in a three-day field visit and public hearings in the northern region to oversee the implementation of select development projects and engage with local populations.
