After the federal elections in June 2010 the Flanders AWEPA Section organized their first official opening event on 25 May 2011 on World Africa Day in the Parliament for all the Flemish MPs en AWEPA members. President of the Flemish Parliament Hon. Jan Peumans opened the event followed by a speech delivered by Minister of State and AWEPA President Ms. Miet Smet, who spoke about the mission and programs of AWEPA. She emphasized the importance of capacity building for strengthening newly elected African parliamentarians in their overight role of government.
Special guest Prof. Dr. Luc Huyse from the Catholic University Leuven delivered a keynote speech on democracy in Africa. With a background as a sociologist, an expert on sub-Saharan Africa and transitional justice, he provided his insights, impressions and discussed the challenges facing new democracies.
MPs discussed how to jointly overcome the challenges facing African parliaments and how AWEPA can be of support.
